Impaired Driving

Impaired driving puts countless lives at risk every day, yet it’s one of the most preventable causes of accidents and fatalities on our roads. At SD EMSC, we are dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or fatigue. By educating communities, promoting responsible choices, and supporting prevention efforts, we can work together to save lives and keep our roads safe for everyone.

The I Choose Program

The I Choose program is a full encompassing impaired driving program for South Dakota teens. In this program, students will learn about what impairment is, how it affects the brain, how to be a designated driver, having a plan, and about South Dakota DUI laws. Every choice a student makes has consequences, with programs like I Choose, students have an idea of the consequences associated with driving impaired.

The I Choose program is able to be taught in an hour or over several days. This program covers things like how SD laws affect drivers charged with a DUI, effects of alcohol on the teen brain, and having a plan when an uncomfortable situation arises just to name a few parts of the program. 


The I Choose programs includes:

  • A 10-page booklet

  • Activities for interaction; a puzzle, a foam ball, 3D style impairment glasses

  • An educator guide

  • A Commitment Card for the students to sign, making the commitment to not drive impaired
